Nostalgic Friday 43: how nostalgic this can be?

June 13th, 2008 by ammu80

Finally I got the photos from the organizers! :) You may want to
read my previous post about the award I received from the Society HERE. Okie okie.. nothing much there except for a photo, which summarised the whole thing.

Maybe now I can brag
elaborate a bit about it. It was an award for the Best Postgraduate
Student@Postgrad Prize in the field of nutrition given by the Nutrition
Society of Malaysia. Its an annual thingy and each year max 3 master
graduates and max 3 PhD graduates will be selected nationwide for the
award. This year, 3 master graduates and only 1 PhD graduate were
selected. The award comes with a certificate and some handy cash prize
as well :D

NSM best postgrad award
Award was given by the Founder of NSM - Dr Choong. Current President, Dr Tee is at the far left.

NSM best postgrad award
Proud moment to be cherished for a very long time *grins*

Maybe I should have acted rude and said ‘no, i don’t want an award which single just nutritionists from the rest of the world’.
Some gestures are meant to be accepted with pride, and I feel honoured
to walk up that stage for the second time (first was for my BSc) in my
career. Oh boy, I’ll sleep well tonite.

Besides, my little sister has revived her blog again. Hopefully it will last this time *grins again* This week’s Nostalgic Friday is dedicated to her  and her "she-shines":

Venillave with a little twist :)

Enjoy and have a wonderful weekend!

Being judged

June 11th, 2008 by ammu80

When
you publish a blog post, post a picture in Flickr or start a Facebook
account, you are subjecting yourself to be known to 6+B people out
there. The is no such thing as ‘maintaining’ a low profile when you
have snaps and your life experience pasted here. You are known. Face
it. And when you willingly put yourself on the limelight and of course,
people will start judging you from that day onwards. We are vulnerable
in cyberworld.

Yea, this is a personal space of us, the
bloggers. We are entitled to do whatever we want here without being
questioned. BUT unlike our own home, we are not confined to 4 walls.
Your neighbours can have ‘full view’ of whatever you are doing in your
cyberspace. When that happens, couldn’t it be more courteous to be
humble?

If you think you are entitled to an opinion of your own
(which is true). So does Mak Minah who has a pisang goreng stall down
the street. So does your distant cousin who secretly reads about your
night out with boyfriends. So does your greatest rival of the
blogworld. So does the so-called obsessive Flickr fan of yours. The key
is to be yourself without hurting other human beings.

Guess that is not too much to ask.

*
a post out of my frustration reading posts just published to condemn
others without facts, which I think is a wastage of space.

Shopping spree in GISF 2008

June 10th, 2008 by ammu80

I had a mega-shopping spree last Saturday. Mega not because I bought
lot of stuff but also I did it all in a record time of 2 hours (*wink
wink)! It was Global Indian Shopping Festival (GISF) time again but I
have no pictures to share this time. You may want to check out the
previous post on GISF.

Now
that I have started to live in ‘budget’ due to the fact that I have a
Kancil to feed, let me go through stuffs that I bought and the price:
(P/S:
‘budget’ here refers to lower amount to be spent on shopping and other
luxury spending. The use of the term ‘budget’ may vary according
individuals )

  • 1 white-turquoise sequined saree - RM95
  • 3 kurti tops for aunt - RM 30
  • 1 kurti top for me - RM10
  • 2 kurti tops for sis - RM20
  • tit-bits - RM10
  • indian sweets - RM14
  • 3 sequined/embroidered bags -RM65

So, in total = RM244 + RM3 (parking ticket).

But the satisfaction that I get = priceless!! :P

Manya Blog Awards 2008

June 6th, 2008 by ammu80

My apologies for skipping Nostalgic Friday post yesterday. Was out
the whole day and the by the time I come back, I was dead tired.

Let’s make up for it now :)

Beginning yesterday (or was it the day before?), Manya Blog Awards has
been opened to all blog readers to cast their vote for their favourite
blog. Simply put, it is a Malaysian Indian version of the famous
Blogger Choice Awards. The differences? Manya is confined to
short-listed Malaysian Indian blogs and awarded by Putera MIC, while
Blogger Choice Awards is more global. As expected, there is a lot of
criticisms thrown at Manya, but the efforts shown by Putera to gain
back support of bloggers is commendable. No true blogger could be
‘bought’ by an award, and it will definitely not ’sway’ us from our way
of blogging. Some may not have that confidence, but I do.

Alright, more about Manya…

I
don’t want to bore you all with facts which you can read in Manya’s
home page. There are few bloggers within our blogging community who
have been nominated for this year’s award, including yours truly. Most
of the nominated bloggers have accepted their nomination but a couple
of bloggers have chosen to be dropped from the nomination list. There
are 9 categories of awards, and two more ’special’ awards - Readers’
Choice Award + Putera’s Award.

Now, the most important part of the post…

Go
to Manya Awards, and vote for me now!!Readers are required to rank the
blogs in each category and voting period is for a month. I have been
nominated in two categories - Most Popular Female Blogger and Best Personal Blog. Please vote me *blink *blink *shy *shy..

Besides, there are lot more other blogs which you may wanna get to know and vote as well!!

Start casting your vote now! :)

I have published this song before, but now I feel like wanna hear it again. Troubled time, my frens! :P

Rising fuel price - Kancil’s point of view

June 6th, 2008 by ammu80

There was a time when my food (read FUEL) cost
Ammu just RM30 (USD9.21) per week. She was staying in hostel and the
hardest work I have to do was to drive her to her faculty/eatery
everyday, and back home during the weekends. She never failed to make
sure I have enough to eat and I never starved in my life.

kancil

Not
that I am complaining that she is not feeding me enough. She is a
generous (ahem) person, and never left my stomach hit E. In turn, I was
obedient to her. I still am. Never once I let her down by stopping in
the middle of the road, and I will never do that to her. She spent most
of her time with me, alone and I am the one she truly believes. We
should never let down people who put their trust in us. Correct? :)

I
know she has plans to sell me off soon, and I accept that fact. I’m
getting old and she deserves a newer companion. She still feels bad
about her decision to trade me off. I know. She loves me.
But lately
I feel I’m slowly becoming a burden for her. Well, as I said before -
one reason is because I am ageing and another reason is the rising food price. Can you imagine my food gonna
cost her at least RM55 (for a tank full)?? Right now Ammu is travelling
alot, and she got to feed me at least once a week. Now, isn’t that too
much for this girl?

She is already thinking how to cut down her
travelling. If there is a LRT service to her uni, she would have taken
that, but sadly there is none. She is left with no option but to use me
everyday. Geezz!! I feel really bad. I really wanna scream and tell
that I don’t wish to eat expensive food stuff but well, I have no option here.

Please forgive me.

Lots of hugs,
Kancil 1980

A perfectionist, I am

June 6th, 2008 by ammu80

I can’t stand disorganized work place.
I need to clean my room every week without fail.
I fold clothes and even plastic bags carefully.
I make sure all my pens have caps.
Every single document is carefully arranged on my desk.
The rubbish bin needs to be emptied everyday.
I read everything I type at least twice before sending it off.

And of course I got pissed when the Internet connection not even close to ‘perfect’!!! Grrr…

*Specially dedicated to the sucky Internet connection I am facing since the last few days.

Between, here are some pics to cheer everyone up! :P

DSC00150 copy
In the morning while getting ready to campus. Tried miserably to camwhore. No, I can’t do it. My worst pic so far :P

DSC00155
My organized workstation. Nah, not for the picture sake. Honestly it is like that everyday! :)

Okie, you have came across words like ‘campus’, ‘School’ etc.. what you think I’m up to? *hint - it has something to do with my new year wishes

Politicians, celebrities & blogging

May 26th, 2008 by ammu80

he blogworld now is under intrusion. Serious - no joke. Those living in
my part of the country would probably know what I am talking
about(*hint - check out mahen’s post).
I am not going to take sides and start to sort of attack those who
caused such surge in blogging activities in Malaysia. I see it as a
positive sign - even politicians from the ruling party (who used to say
bloggers are mainly unemployed women) have taken up blogging. Besides,
the recent developments in the country also has urged many M’sians
(especially those of Indian origin) to take up blogging as well
*applause! We are all blogmates now! ;)

But the question of
originality arise whenever I come across these blogs. I have begin to
wonder if the blogs of prominent politicians of the ruling party are
actually created and maintained by them. Okie, some may be unleashing
the blogger in them, but how about the others? These are people who
don’t even write their own speeches! Are they actually sitting in front
of their costly-higher end-but-under utilised laptops? Or have they
employed other individuals to blog on their behalf? If they did the
later, do they actually visit their own blogs? Hmm.. I’m still
wondering.

If
that is one dilemma the M’sian blogwo rld is facing, another form of
‘blogs’ is killing the spirit of blogging as well. Those are what I
call ‘copy-paste-blogs’, and all you can find there will be political
news articles copied and pasted as their posts! *sigh… We all have
the access to news portals, and I don’t think we need to read the same
news again and again. Okie okie.. it’s an important news, we got the
point the every first time we read it! Maybe you could show some of
your writing skills besides the copy-paste article?

Then
another group of people called celebrity bloggers. Blogging is serious
business nowadays, and (certain) bloggers have clinched the celebrity
blogger title, but when I read through their blogs, I can’t find a
single useful post which I think that would justify the tag ‘celebrity
blogger’. Seriously, I think that term needs to be banned! Everyone
blogs as per their interests, and some celebrity bloggers ONLY blogs
for others’ interest. Its all about getting more hits and more hits and
even more hits. The passion for blogging has died and since replaced by
quest for popularity.

Maybe this may not go well with many people out there, but hey.. what’s

Choose the best

May 22nd, 2008 by ammu80

I had a really odd and difficult day. As much as I want to wake up
every morning to a bright, sunny, peaceful.. [and blah blah] day, I am
facing that much of challenges to keep my day ‘alive’. And the day was
‘dead’ today.

Okie, lets not dwell so much on it. I don’t want tulipspeaks to go into sombre mood (like the author) :P

To
keep my mind away from whatever-it-was, I decided to design a name card
for me. Not an official kinda business card which states my profession,
home address and stuff like that. I need a card which identifies me as
a blogger. I think most would have figure out by now that I attend a
number of get-together among bloggers etc. So I need a card to
represent the blogger in me (ah, that sounds nice.. ) hehehe..

Guess
I was feeling a little ‘too down’ and ended up with 3 designs instead
of one. I was thinking hard which one to choose when I got the idea of
asking my blog readers instead! Here are the designs and please leave a
comment stating which design I should go for. Thanks!

Name card - design 1
The
first design I worked on. Very simple one with most of the information
on the front of the card (top) and I only inserted my email add at the
back (below).

Name card - design 2
My personal favourite. I have no special reason to like it, but well.. I just like it! :P

Name card - design 3
The third design which I pay tribute to tulipspeaks (with reference to the tulip motif).

So which one do you like?

nutriWEB

May 21st, 2008 by ammu80

A proud website by the Nutrition Society of Malaysia, an organization I am currently a member.

While many tend to shy away from nutriWEB
and only visit it during the registration for the annual scientific
conference, I still feel this is a good initiate by the society to
disseminate some nutritional information to the public. You get to
browse the soft copies of research papers published in Malaysian
Journal of Nutrition, download health recipes taken from their Resepi
Sihat Pilihan Bijak cooking books, calculate your BMI in their
nutrition tool and get some health facts as well. The latest news
updated in the website is the newspaper articles published in the main
stream media.

I do have my grouses about the site as well. I
hope they will update it as frequent as possible. The last update prior
to the Nutrition Month news was way back in 2006! For example, they can
always have new articles on nutrition and health written exclusively
for the website. The council is made up with all the experts anyway!

And I do hope they will change the layout/look of the site. It has been like that every since I started visiting! *sigh..
